The six dimensions of strategic clarity

Strategic clarity is not a single thing. It is the product of thinking well across multiple dimensions - each of which can be clear or unclear independently of the others.

This matters because the most common failure mode in strategic work is not a complete absence of clarity. It is partial clarity - a situation in which some dimensions of the work are well understood while others remain vague, assumed, or unexamined. Partial clarity is more dangerous than acknowledged uncertainty, because it creates the conditions for false confidence.

Intent: why this, and why now?

The first dimension is intent - a clear, shared understanding of what the work is trying to achieve and why it matters at this particular moment. Intent is not a mission statement. It is a specific answer to a specific question: what would success look like, and what would be different if we achieved it?

Without clarity on intent, every other dimension of the work is built on an unstable foundation. Teams that are unclear on intent will make consistent decisions in the wrong direction - not because they are incompetent, but because they are optimising for a goal that has not been clearly defined.

Value: what are we actually offering?

The second dimension is value - a clear understanding of what the work produces for the people it is intended to serve. This is not a marketing question. It is a fundamental one. Organisations that cannot articulate the specific value they create, for specific people, in specific circumstances, will struggle to make consistent decisions about priorities, resources, and direction.

Positioning: how are we distinctively placed?

Positioning is the dimension that most organisations underinvest in. It is not enough to know what value you create. You need to understand how you create it differently from the alternatives available to the people you serve - and why that difference matters to them.

Structure: how does the work actually function?

Structure is the operational dimension of clarity - an understanding of how the work is organised, resourced, and governed. Intent without structural clarity is aspiration without architecture. The two need to be developed together.

Momentum: how do we move from intention to action?

Momentum addresses the gap between thinking and doing. It is concerned with the specific steps, decisions, and commitments that will move the work forward - and with the conditions required to sustain that movement over time.

Growth: how does this evolve?

The final dimension is growth - an understanding of how the work develops over time, how success creates new opportunities and new challenges, and how the organisation needs to evolve to capture the former and navigate the latter.

These six dimensions are not a checklist to be completed in sequence. They are lenses through which work can be examined - each illuminating aspects of the situation that the others do not. The goal is not to achieve perfect clarity across all six simultaneously. It is to know which dimensions are clear, which are not, and what the implications of that are for the decisions that need to be made.
